I am a big advocate of getting as many nutrients as possible into kids at snack time.  Meal times can be fraught with picky eaters, low appetites and distractions.  I have tried fruit salads and healthy foods in fun shapes.  I have tried peanut butter and even nutella.  However, the biggest hit with my daughter, since she was old enough to drink through a straw, is the smoothie!  You can load smoothies with as many rich and hearty fruits and vegetables as you like, and kids feel like they are getting a milkshake!  To get that super creamy texture, be sure to add lots of banana and yoghurt.  I also like to add blueberries and pomegranate juice for their noted health benefits.  Here is my recipe, tried and loved by my daughter:

  • 1/2 banana per person
  • 1/3 cup yoghurt per person
  • 5 frozen strawberries per person
  • handful of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries per person
  • a splash of orange juice
  • a splash of pomegranate juice
  • 1/2 cup pineapple chunks per person

Simply put it all in the blender (juice, yoghurt and bananas first) and blend it until it is the desired texture.  I promise, your kids will love it and you will feel great for getting such a healthy snack into your kids!  My daughter demands one every day!  Enjoy!
